Johnny Appleseed Festival 2012

Johnny Appleseed Festival is our yearly touchstone that tells us that fall really is here. Even though we miss the carefree days of summer, the festival reminds us that fall is fun and beautiful too. The snap in the morning air, the savory smells of the chicken & dumplings, kettle corn popping and the whistling…

I seriously debated coming up this year for this, but I’m at that point where I need a bathroom every 1/2 hour, so yeahhh…. porta potty much?

That said, Nick and I WILL be there next year! I’ll have our little guy in our carrier! And it’ll be our first time at the festival – YEAH!!!

betsy king: making me want to have a baby right.this.second with every family post, since 2010.

how I got rid of cable, but still watch TV

We did the unthinkable about six months ago: We got rid of cable. Yes, I was an admitted crap tv watcher. 16 & pregnant, Toddlers and Tiaras, Kardashians, you name it, they were all on my roster. I lived in fear of someone seeing my DVR full of my guilty pleasure filled junk. I knew…

We’ve been cable free since 2005 or 2006. Being able to record TV on our computer has been awesome! With some fiddling, you can actually stream your recorded shows from your computer to your TV through your Roku (we use Plex Media Server–not sure if it’s PC only though) so you don’t have to watch only on your computer.

I did the same thing last year with Roku….amazing! We subscribe to Hulu and Netflix, but the price is peanuts compared to a bundle option. I left the internet at the regular speed and we never had issues. I’m excited you shared the little EyeTV thingy, cause I’d love to get local channels! Even with the price tag, it’s a HUGE savings throughout the year. We watch WAY less tv, and love to be able to watch stuff on the go with my iPhone and Nook color where there’s wi-fi, especially with three small kiddos. Thanks for sharing!!!

CBS Sunday Morning!!! grrrr no wonder we don’t think alike..hugs

  • AmySeptember 18, 2012 - 11:03 am

My husband and I have been married for two years, and have never had cable (mostly because we were in college for one of those years). We watch a lot of Hulu on our Mac. It’s awesome to know about all these options! Thanks for sharing.

I was hoping someone would add some tips. Yay! Plex it is!!

  • KailaSeptember 18, 2012 - 11:28 am

We did the same thing after our baby was born. We use apple tv, but haven’t looked back. Just wish we could have saved money doing it earlier 🙂

  • BetsySeptember 18, 2012 - 4:49 pm

Great post and congrats for ditching cable. We did the same thing 2 years ago and have never looked back. We also watch Mad Men on iTunes which is great b/c we can (and do) replay episodes often – especially during the show’s hiatus.

Thanks for the great tips – we’ll definitely check out Eye TV. Not only are we saving money but I know we’re gaining time which is precious. Time spent getting things checked off my to-do list and most importantly time spent with family.

Oh, and we love CBS Sunday Morning too. It’s declared “trumpet time” in our house. “The trumpets are on!!!”

For Disney, Disney XD, and Disney JR. there are apps available for the ipad where you can watch episodes for free. And there is a site: http://www.watchdisneychannels.com/.

  • ShriyaSeptember 18, 2012 - 5:14 pm

Miss Betsy, you may already know about this, but there are Disney Channel apps and there is a website. http://www.watchdisneychannels.com/. Just wanted to let you know:) Oh, and also there are apps for ABC and ABC family for the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch.

SUCH an awesome and informative post, Betsy! Kyle and I were glued to yesterday!

  • AliSeptember 22, 2012 - 8:33 am

This is great Betsy! I love that you are not a sport watching family, sometimes I feel like we are the only people in the state of Indiana who don’t watch sports (or care about them at all)… Thanks for all this info.

  • AliSeptember 22, 2012 - 8:38 am

I think two husbands who hate sports is a great accomplishment too! I remember gushing to my girlfriends when I met my husband that he didn’t like sports.

Sneak peek of Jill’s family

I’m practically a zombie from a FULL day at Johnny Appleseed with the kids today (from 10 AM till 4:30 PM, whew!) but I couldn’t let another day go by without sharing Jill’s adorable family with you. Speaking of, “WHEW!” capturing four kids was not a piece of cake for me (Jill, I need to…

A look back at Johnny Appleseed Festival: 2011

It’s that time of year again…Johnny Appleseed Festival!!! This weekend is also our 7th wedding anniversary so we always have a great way to celebrate with a weekend at the festival. (We are TOTAL nerds!) Life got away from me last year as the magic of the festival was soon overshadowed by the magic (oh…

    Happy Anniversary Betsy!

a sneak peek of jill

Jill was the winning bidder of a photo session by me that I donated to the Habitat for Humanity auction that Matilda Jane Clothing held last spring. I photographed her adorable family too, but first we did some profile pics for her business. Isn’t she just gorgeous?! She’s going to kill me for doing her… Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Ah! A sneak peek just for me?! Did NOT see that coming! Thank you for your sweet words, Bets! You are such a talented photographer and made me feel so relaxed and able to smile and laugh– you can’t even tell that I nearly got backed over by my own car just minutes before this was taken! I’m so excited to see the rest from our crazy-fun time together!

  • JenSeptember 13, 2012 - 9:37 am
