hot saturday night for bets & john

My advice to single people is if you are a nerd, try very hard to find another nerd to spend the rest of your life with. Then, when you get the crazy idea at 10:30 on a Saturday night to learn how to sew, they won’t even hesitate. In fact, they will be totally excited with you.

My friend Annie very generously handed me down a very nice sewing machine about a year ago. It sat collecting dust and very good and creative intentions this whole time until another friend of mine sent me a magazine clipping with an idea to create tote bags out of T shirts. Inspired by this simple idea, and also needing a good basic project to give us some sea legs for a dream we have of sewing Miles’ Halloween costume, we decided to give it a try. (Wow, that is a hideously long sentence. I love it.)

We had a BLAST doing this project together. John was HILARIOUS. The engineering of a sewing machine FASCINATED him and once he got to drive the sewing machine (I mean, it has a foot pedal like a car, so why wouldn’t guys like it?) he FLIPPED OUT. I actually recorded his reaction on my iphone (remember how I said I was a nerd?) but I can’t share it with you because he was so excited once he got it to go really fast that colorful words were flying from his mouth with glee. It was hilarious, but I’ll just have to keep the gem of that recording all to myself.

There were actually two projects. My first project was to take a scarf I had cut in half to reduce the bulk and simply give it a finished hemmed edge. (Anybody want a purple plaid scarf? I now have two!) Then we both gave making a T shirt tote a try. John practiced first on a ratty old undershirt of his and it turned out so ugly. It looks like gross stretched out underwear! Though we filled it with some items from our pantry and it holds quite a bit. I can only imagine what the cashiers at the grocery would think. Then we took a T shirt from my brief stint as a barista at The Mill and made it into a tote, complete with an extra sewn on patch. (Does anybody reading this blog remember when I worked at The Mill? Oh, I have hilarious stories about my inability to make change that would have you rolling. But I won’t be telling them, of course.) Back to the tote, we used white thread to be funky and my stitches ended looking very Frankenstienien, at least the ones I sewed. (I didn’t get the memo about not pushing the fabric through. Opps.)

Here’s some photos from our evening that went till about 1:30 in the morning. See, I told you we party hard.

Sew

Here’s one more from my iphone. Notice I was wearing a headband made out of a cut off neck from the t-shirt. Classy, huh? (I actually think that will discovery will mean many sacrifices for T shirts in our house when I can’t find a headband, which happens about 6 times a day.) Oh, and yes, I wear my sunglasses at night.

It’s been a cool week around here. Miles started pre-school and we learned something fun and new. Now we just need to keep working on it, especially if we have any hope of making a costume for Miles that can live up to my lofty expectations for the best holiday ever.

So what should we sew next? I have some socks I would like to make Babylegs out of, but with Miles out of that stage, I’m not super motivated by that project. So send us your simple sewing ideas and we’ll see what we can do. Oh, and I would love to know what’s sitting around your house waiting to be tried out? I have plenty of untouched projects calling my name at any given moment. (unfinished knitted poncho project, drapes and photos waiting to be hung, patched drywall waiting to be painted…)

Nighty night everybody! I’ve got a busy, busy week. I’ll be blogging another finished senior soon, I’m photographing one tomorrow night, we have our four year wedding anniversary on Thursday (WOODHOUSE DAYSPA SIDE BY SIDE MASSAGES!!!! Yippee!) and then all sorts of fun stuff going on this weekend to celebrate. Better go get my rest. (Yikes! How is it 12:37 AM?!)

that scarf sounds soooo cute. I’ve been wanting to make one for a long time now. :]

Oh suggestions for sewing….Even though Miles is too big for BabyLegs. Use the same idea for cutting off the socks and heming them, but sew the ‘Baby Legs’ to a matching short sleeve shirt that Miles will mostlikely outgrow by this winter.

I love that you guys did this together! I also love th t- shirt tote idea. I have a metric ton of old t-shirts from an intro to sewing class I used to teach and now one more creative and useful way to make them go away! Woot! So what is miles going to be for Halloween? There are tons of simple patterns out there that can be adapted to make just about anything, so I personally would start with an idea and then go pattern searching. I am so excited that you guys have discovered sewing together! Also, jelous of the couples massage…. I will have to bookmark this post to remind Jeff that 4 is the side by side massage anniversary!

LOVE IT!!! sewing machines are very fascinating, but I definitely have no idea how to work one 🙁 oh and john’s bag is HILARIOUS

You guys are hilarious! John’s bag really does look like a giant pair of underwear. I’ve seen people use old sweaters to make pillow covers, and they usually turn out really cool. The biggest unfinished project I have is actually from high school….I cut all of my cheerleading and dance tshirts to make a quilt–the shirts are all sewn together but there is definitely no back to it. I have a feeling it will never get done.

You 2 have got to be the cutest couple ever!!! Not very many couples can say they have sewn together, SO fun!! Oh and this website is super cool for sewing projects. http://www.craftbits.com/sewing-crafts

yeah -so glad it came out of the closet! love the stretchy underwear bag and of course the scarf modification – perfect first time projects! I know miles is out of baby legs but my drew still wears some of penny’s and calls them pirate arms – of course i made them out of socks with skulls and crossbones – it’s hilarious and fits his personality – i can see miles enjoying them. start by making a basic cape for miles – it will be super easy – promise! that and get a basic pattern for sleep pants and make that little boy some jammies in fun fabric that he picks out! oh the possibilities are endless!

I wanted to go on record as the only male commenting here: Even though I have not seen you two in three years, I can totally see you too in that evening. That is the simple bliss that comes with family, age and creativity.

I love to sew but my portfolio contains 85% Halloween costumes! Love the bags — keep having fun with your sewing machine! Another easy project — I got some silk drapes on clearance and made reusable gift bags (with gold cord for ties) that look great under the tree at Christmas!

hahaha!!! I am SO DYING to see the video!! 😉

I pulled out my dust covered sewing machine once. I am clueless when it comes to sewing too. But I wanted to make rag curlers for my daughter (ala Little House on the Prairie) and when my husband walked in the room he all but took over the project. Driving a sewing machine is THRILLING. 😉

Nice work on your bags. You are quite a seamstress. 🙂

Betsy- John’s bag made me literally laugh out loud today in the library and EVERYONE was staring at me, what a hilarious creation! i love the t-shirt idea 🙂 so cute! what a fun idea!

I’ve been reading your blog for a loooong time, but never posted a comment! Todays post had me rolling with laughter, seriously… that bag made out of the undershirt!!! I’m still laughing right now!!! =D

I have a unfinished scarf sitting below my nightstand… I started knitting it when I was pregnant with my first baby (she’ll be 10 soon, just to give you an idea!).

I love it! Way to spend a night together! 🙂 And happy early anniversary!

  • ChristinaSeptember 17, 2009 - 3:57 pm

    Happy Anniversary!

I’ll have to try out the tshirt bags too — I decided yesterday to do a bigger undertaking of sewing machine craftiness (a quilt to use for sessions) once the holiday rush is over. Considering how much the bobbin holder hated me years ago, it should be interesting!

Betsy, This looks SO fun! I’ve been wanting to pick up sewing for a while now, so you guys have given me inspiration. And tomorrow night, you can talk to my hubby about how multi-purpose those sleeves to T-shirts can be. You do NOT want to see what he looks like when he wears his to run in when it’s cold. OMG IT’S RIDICULOUS.

BTW: I have this book and would be more than willing to share 😉
