yep, we got a van and I LOVE it

Ok, so you all know I said goodbye to the Jeep in my usual dramatic fashion. Now it’s time to introduce you to Sasha, our new (to us) mini van.

Van

Miles looks bored here, but I assure you, he thinks Sasha is just as awesome as I do. I don’t care who thinks I’m a nerd, vans are freaking awesome. I actually would have been marginally ok with continuing to drive around two kids in our Accord, but we rented a van last year when we made a huge Ikea run and once our booties slid comfortably into the captian’s chairs, that swagger wagon had us at hello.

So for an entire year I have pined for a van. I cut out a photo of a van and put it on my vision board. I lamented with fists in the air during every pain in the ass maneuver into the Accord, “If only I had a van!” Every grocery run seem to be an exercise of me just thinking of every way a van would make the weekly torture assignment into something actually pleasurable. One could say I manifested a new van into my life “The Secret” style, but I have a feeling my husband would say I just wouldn’t shut up about it until he finally went and got the van.

So we got our 2008, Honda Odyssey (even after typing that word into my search engine 9 million times I STILL struggle to spell it) with leather, but no DVD player. It’s actually really hard to find one without a DVD player that still has leather and that’s actually what we wanted. Miles is already asking for TV enough when we are home, the van is the last place I want to hear him whining for more. So even though other parents think we are crazy, we are a no tv in the car family. (At least for now.)

This has seriously been a life changing purchase for us. Even Miles is thrilled. We found this van at a great little dealership in Ohio so I stayed home with the kids while John took care of getting it and bringing it back. Miles was asleep when he brought it home and when he woke up in the morning and we told him there was a van in the garage it was seriously like Christmas morning. Miles was hopping all around, testing out the automatic doors and exclaiming that we had picked out his favorite color!

Getting a van is like that feeling you have after wearing tight jeans all night and you strip them off the minute you get home to snuggle up in comfy sweat pants. It’s glorious. Yep, my van just might be the vehicle equivalent of sweat pants and I love it.

To wrap this up, the van is awesome for these reasons:

-Doors that open for me. People breeze by me all day without nary a glance at my struggle to get a stroller and four year old through a storefront door but I can make my van open the door for me every time. Talk about making your own happiness.

-I can put Jocelyn in my baby carrier (the one I wear) inside the van instead of outside in the wind, rain or snow. For this reason alone I wish we had gotten the van MONTHS ago. I grocery shop with Joss in the carrier as Chicco carseats don’t fit on top of grocery carts. So this has been so life changing, especially with this awful weather.

-The Accord could only fit the four of us with NO room for passengers. So that means we can take a friend or my mom on an outing with us without taking a second car. (This was a huge pain in the butt when Uncle Mark visited. So yay! We can all go together now.)

-The Jeep was not suitable for driving kids around, and I really stunk at driving a stick, so we now officially have two cars that I can drive and have kids in. Yay! (Now we just get to drop bank on another carseat. The spending is endless.)

-We can put as many strollers in the back as we want and groceries, a christmas tree or any old vintage chair that I find in a thrift shop along the way. Garage sale season? WATCH OUT, here I come.

-Ikea runs are now possible when ever we want as we finally have room to bring things home.

-We have an extended family beach vacay this spring and I would not have survived driving 14 hours crammed in an Accord.

-This van is so much safer for my family. Let’s pause here and take a look at my family who I want to keep safe. Awwwwwww. There’s Joss in nothing but a diaper again. That poor girl. Quick, someone send me a bunch of baby girl clothes, size 6-12 months! 😉

Yes, I’m now a minivan mom. I would say I’m embarrassed if driving it wasn’t so freakin awesome.

YAY for your van! 🙂 Sasha is a good name. LOL.

Oh my god, I love that you posted this. Murphy would lose his gourd over a van, too. We’re seriously thinking about it because I sold my truck last year and now we just have a Saturn Ion that basically had a half back seat. Two kids? Yeah, that’s gonna get a little tight. Enjoy your family spaceship!

Looks awesome! Glad you love it, mama. My motto is currently, “whatever makes life with 2 kids easier.” Just think how smoothly you’ll breeze through the McD’s drive through! lol- kidding. 🙂 And baby girl clothes 6-12 coming your way soon!

Love it! We are saving up for an Odyssey and I can’t wait to get one!

You guys are so stinkin’ cute in front of your van! Sometimes I think photos like that seem so funny to take, but then you look back a year later and are SO glad you have them! My sis made the big transition in the summer and we are ALL in love. It is seriously the best thing for families. It’s amazing SUVs are still in the running because vans really do have it goin’ for ’em. Isn’t the cargo room CRAZY? We did a four-hour road trip with 4 adults, 3 kids and enough stuff for five days and were COMFORTABLE! Enjoy!

Hey, we have Avram’s Graco carseat at my dad’s house if you want to use it until she’s big enough for a convertible! Seriously. It’s like brand new. You could totally borrow it. It’s just chillin in the basement over there.

I am so jealous you have a minivan! And, as always, you look adorable. 🙂

and I have a little jacket that has Jocelyn’s name on it. Since I will never have another little girl named Jocelyn its yours if you want it. Only problem is it is 3-6 months. I’m pretty sure my Jocelyn wore it past then though and she was a big girl. I’ll email you a picture.

i’ve been driving a mini van for a week now while we visit the US and i have to say, i LOVE it, too! they just feel so luxurious nowadays. 😉

Congratulations on the new car! But I was suprised by what you wrote about the DVD-player. Is it really common in the US to have that in your car? I’m from Europe and I have hardly ever seen it. Hoe much TV do those kids watch, when they even have it in the car?!

  • annie pFebruary 24, 2011 - 11:04 am

enjoy – it’s great, especially when the kids are little. I felt the same way you do now about the van -but mine was getting rid of the van and getting my current car. A new phase of life to enjoy!

Yippee for you guys! I have an Odyssey and LOVE IT! Congrats!

Way to go Betsy & John. Even as a single guy, I WANT one of these after riding in a friend’s. Best van ever!

You don’t know me, but I follow Matilda Jane’s clothing on FB and found your name in a roundabout way on her page…anyway, you are soooo me! I am pining for a Van after renting one last fall to go to Disneyland (from AZ) and have literally typed Honda Odyessey into my search engine a million and one times too. AND, I feel the same way and want one with leather (hello, barfing kids!) but NO DVD player (hello, WHINING kids!) I feel like I know you after reading this…maybe someday soon I will be in your shoes (thanks to our not too shabby tax return) and will send you a pic of me next to my own version of Sasha. 🙂 Thanks for posting!

we’ve got a tv-free-Odyssey too and love it (and even though it took me a while, I finally got a handle on the spelling) – congrats, have fun and enjoy!

  • BrittanyFebruary 25, 2011 - 4:39 pm

I’m sure you mentioned it before, but what kind of diapers do you use on Jocelyn? They are so cute and we want to switch to cloth for our baby 🙂

  • BetsyFebruary 25, 2011 - 4:55 pm

I use Grasshopper Diapers and BumGenius on Jocelyn. You can find Grasshopper Diapers in the link above or here: http://www.grasshopperdiapers.com

Betsy girl, I soooo share in your excitement! We had a four and three year old in highback boosters, AND an infant in an infant car seat in our, get this, Honda CIVIC!! Four door version, but SERIOUSLY?? Lol The toll people use to look at us like we had four heads when we went through everyday. EVERYday I still am thankful for my awesome Odyssey. We do have the rear entertainment, but I can say as a mommy who didn’t originally want it, that our recent trip from NH to FL was bliss thanks to those two little screens! And we have the same trip next week, which I’m expecting to be bliss lol. Enjoy your van momma!!! If you’re like me, it’ll never get old for a million mommy reasons : )

We just got a Nissan Quest this past weekend, so I totally understand your excitement. I thought with only two kids there just wasn’t a reason for a mini-van, but I was so wrong! We’ve only had it 3 days and I LOVE it and probably will drive it until the wheels fall off. Enjoy your new van!
