amy’s baby shower

Well folks, the illness has marched on and now the scoreboard in the King house hold is currently two ear infections, one sinus infection (ewwwww) and one plain old cold. Yep, all four Kings are sick now. Thankfully, the pugs are healthy little rock stars as usual, so thankfully we don’t have to add canine illnesses to the score. So this blog post comes to you dripping in antibiotics. Let’s just hope and pray that this is the last blog post where I mention being sick. It’s getting VERY old.

I threw my BFF Amy a baby shower last weekend. I have been waiting YEARS to throw her one. Ok, she’s only been married for a year and a half, but she has always known she has wanted children and I’ve always known she should be surrounded by them. So the weeks are counting down and it’s time to celebrate the little baby boy coming soon!

I didn’t take a lot of photos that day as I was busy greeting people, cutting cake and shuffling presents, but I also think I was a little shy that day. Yea, I’m a photographer and all, but sometimes I just don’t want to make people feel weird by taking their photos during an event, you know? It was such a fun party (seriously, it went till 10:30 that night! Have you ever been to a shower where people had such a great time it went into the evening? Yeah, it was that great. Yay!) that I didn’t want to mess with the mood. So here’s just a few photos I captured.

Here’s the table, that actually extended beyond this photo, full of food and cakes. I got some super cute vintage style baby blocks as part of my gift to Amy and spelled out “BABY CORNELL” on the table and had other blocks stacked around the food. (Cornell is Amy’s last name, not the name of the baby, in case you were wondering.)

I’ve always wanted to have an excuse to make teeny tiny little toothpick flags.

I’m seriously addicted to chocolate and sprinkled covered pretzels. I’ve been known to whip up a quick dozen and then chow through them like a wood chipper in a day. (Unfortunately, I’m not kidding. That would probably explain my mega-weak immune system that exists solely on salt, sugar and carbs.) So it was a no brainer what I would make for the favors. I thought they were adorable all wrapped up! By the way, thank you to my hubby John for helping me design the tags and the sign that hung over the food table and the front door. They were based off some alphabet blocks I got for the baby.

Here she is, the mom to be, opening my gift to her. (I’m so jealous of it! I so want a video monitor, but when you already have a regular one, it seems a little excessive to get another just for fun. So I’m living vicariously through Aim.) Doesn’t she look radiant?

Here’s Amy and her mother in law, Barb, who I got to know during her wedding. (I love that we both have mother in laws named Barb!)

I love, love, LOVE Amy’s mother, Judy, shown here in the middle. Just like Amy, she has shown up at the times in my life when I really needed to be surrounded by good people. She was there when Andy was sick, many times, when my sister passed and when my babies were born. Of course, many just regular days mixed in. She’s an awesome person. I’m also very thankful she lives in Fort Wayne still so Amy has a reason to come home often! The lady on the right is Mrs. Sherman, our High School English teacher turned friend who is FABULOUS.

It was an open house style party, so instead of Amy being stuck behind a pile of gifts all day, she spent her time chatting and laughing with everyone. It was really a great way to throw a baby shower.

Yes, the shower was so much fun, but of course I CANNOT WAIT to get the call that Amy’s baby is here. You never know what it’s like to be a parent until that day comes that the baby is actually in your arms. However, as her friend who already has two, I DO know what it’s like and I’m just SO excited for her to experience what a blessing it is to be a parent.

I’m shushing now. I’m all mushy because we just got done making a video of Jocelyn’s birth story (which I will be posting ASAP) so I’m even doubly excited to Amy now!!!

Nighty night everybody, I need to get to bed and let these drugs do their job!

Oh and just because I’m feeling extra mushy, and I didn’t get a photo of us the day of her shower, I thought I would post this super cute series of pics from Amy’s rehearsal dinner. I think she’s telling the story of how we were the cheerleaders in high school that they always put on the end because we sucked. So since we were the worst ones, (at least during football season, I think we stepped up our game for basketball since we had our very own guy cheerleaders to stunt with) we would talk during the games. That was the beginning of our beautiful friendship. Oh and for the record, I really don’t think we were the worst cheerleaders in the group. I mean, look at us! We have enough spirit between the two of us to move a mountain, so perhaps we were a little mis-understood. Oh well. The great thing about high school is that it doesn’t last forever, but some of the friendships can!

Love ya Aim and I love your baby boy already. Can’t wait to hold him and take five million photos of him!

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been sick! I knew that meant a delay in posting the shower photos that I’ve been anxiously waiting to see! It looks like you went “over and above” in the hostessing dept. Such a fun day of celebration; I was so sad to miss it! Maybe you could come to Minneapolis for spring baby showers after the little guy has arrived!!

You have TOTALLY inspired me! I’ve been trying to think of a very practical way to decorate for our first birthday party over here and love your simply stated banner above the food table. YEA! The little favors are also adorable! Jon has great design skills!

Oh, I SO wish I could have been there. It turned out so beautiful Bets! And I agree about Judy, she is just one of my favorite people.

You are a party planner now! Woohoo!

throwing showers for friends is the best. love the little details – it’s all the things you forget to take in at your own. Amy will be a wonderful mother -I’ll never forget talking to her at you and John’s wedding. She mentioned how she couldn’t wait to one day have a family and she asked about the kids and all. During a time when you don’t always feel special or appreciated – it was a nice reprieve to be asked and praised. Congrats to the Cornells for starting their own family!

This shower was totally fabulous–like going in to a movie set and finding that it was completely real, there for Amy and this huge entourage of people who love her to be together. It was snowy outside, and the fire was going, too, so all the awesome decorations were even better. Barb Cornell went to the same high school that I did in Minneapolis, as did her sister. We had a Minnesota reunion! My history there and my history here are now joined because of Amy and Betsy!

Would love any details of what you did for the open house shower. I am thinking about having mine that way in April, I just love the idea. Thank you!
