latest thrifting finds

Bless my husband. He loves to go thrifting with me, as does Miles, so the other weekend while out and about we ran into “Salvo” as a hipster within earshot called it, or as us regular thirty-somethings call it, Salvation Army. We found a couple books for the kids (P.B. Bear’s School Day and Goodnight Gorilla, our new favorites) and I found a couple of clothing items I thought I would share.

First up is a Rudy Huxtable style beret for Jocelyn. I squealed in delight when I put it on her head, though she promptly pulled it down over her eyes, and off her head. Thankfully, it’s very big, so there’s still hope for it. Oh and it was all of ten cents. (Yes, I washed it first.)

I found a scarf, that isn’t much to write home about, but I’m always on the lookout for scarves I can use as headbands. It was a dime, I think.

This funky little sweater number is what really caught my eye that day. I know it’s blazing hot right now, but I can see myself belting this, pairing it with dark jeans and throwing on some boots with this in the fall. My tip on stuff like this is ignore sizes. This says it’s a size 14, but it most definitely doesn’t fit me like a current size 14. It’s a bit big, but the belt helps. This is one of those things that I’m just not sure if it’s great or not so great though. I’m not gonna know until the cooler weather gets here and I get in that layering mode. I grabbed it though, feeling like I’m really gonna dig it and considering I think it was under a dollar, if it ends up being a flop, I can continue the circle of life and re-donate it.

So what do you think? Love or hate? Be honest, it’s not like I paid a lot for it! That’s the fun of thrifting, you can try things out and if they are a flop, no big loss.

In other thrifting news, John spotting this garage sale find while walking the pugs; a little baby, baby grand piano! It’s adorable and the kids are enjoying plunking around on it. It cost $10. (Instagram photo by my friend Erin, who was at our house that morning and just happened to get to experience Miles’ first concert, lucky her.)

I have to say, garage sales are one of my favorite things about summer and strolling thrift stores are what rainy Saturday afternoons were made for. However, I will say that while our latest shopping trip at “Salvo,” I opened up the oven door to a plastic play kitchen and saw an actual piece of VINTAGE DEEP DISH PIZZA in there. It was GREY. We stood there, in shock, wondering how long that pizza had been left in there. Then we promptly laughed our butts off. BLECH!!! As hilarious as it was, we felt vommy the rest of the day. You certainly can’t be a germaphobe if you are going to go thrifting. You are all lucky I left my iphone in the car that day or this blog post would have a photo of vintage pizza on it!!!

Thanks for reminding me to thrift! Money is tiiiiight right now but I love to shop! You can totally pull off that sweater, the pattern looks very familiar. Let Erin dress it up…who knows what she could come up with. 🙂

I LOVE your “new” sweater and headband! They are both cool. The sweater will be perfect in the fall. I can see it on a hay ride or apple orchard with jeans and tall boots. Perfect! I wish I had the patience to “thrift!”

Oops, no, that belt is mine. It was just Forever 21 though. Nothing pricey.

Love the sweater Betsy! Cant believe the belt came with it, I thought that was yours. BTW, What wide angle lens do you use? I have a 50mm 1.4 and I’m considering getting a wide angle, just doing my homework on allthe different ones.

That belt is from my closet. : )

Wide angle? I just have a 28 mm prime lens on my full frame camera.

LOL ICK!!!! I love ‘salvo’ shops. We have one locally that donates all it’s profits to a battered womens shelter…gives me even more of an excuse to frequent it : ) I found a $2 BRAND NEW 100% silk black blouse yesterday, a brand new dress for my baby $2 and a $25 pretty new desk for my 6 year old. I was so excited, I was wishing my blog was up and running to post. I LOVE the sweater, and the belt is pretty sweet too!
