Last halloween we went on a trip to Brown County with my parents. On our way home we did a little shopping in the quaint little town of Nashville, Indiana. Amongst the ice cream and fudge shops was this adorable little toy store where I found this cute little book/kit. It came with a sock, buttons, stuffing and a book on how to make all sorts of cute little stuffed animals out of socks, namely, a sock monkey. I batted my lashes at John and good ‘ol money bags bought it for me. Yay! (It helps that John has an admiration for crafts himself, so he was all for it. )
It sat on our shelf for four months even though I was dying to make it. Finally, this week I just decided to jump in and make the little sucker. I have really needed to do something creative lately to blow off some steam but I can’t work on the computer as I have two little monkeys of my own hopping all around. However, I could make this monkey over the course of a day, with even a bit of help from Miles.
So here’s my first attempt at a sock monkey. He’s a cute little fella, isn’t he? Miles ordered up a skinny monkey, so I went easy on the stuffing. Miles named him Thunkey. (He always rhymes his stuffed animals names. He also has a lion named Dion.)
Speaking of Miles, he was THRILLED when I had the little monkey pop over his cereal box and say hello this morning. (Wow, I’m not sure that photo could have any more distracting crap in the background.) Miles is a blur because he was rocking the monkey back and forth while hugging it. Awwwwww! I wanted to make the monkey a little shirt to wear, but I was struck with a horrible cold today (yes, sick AGAIN) so I moved on.
Here’s the next sock sewing project, a stuffed toy for Jocelyn. I’m thinking the sock pig would be cute, though I’ll probably make another monkey to perfect the kinks in the first one. I’ll need to embroider the eyes too, since buttons aren’t childproof.
If you want to give it a shot, here’s the kit I got.

Thunkey the Monkey! I love it. and I have to ask…is that one of those ‘absolutely-will-not-spill-anything-in-it’ bowls on the table by Miles? I saw an infomercial for that and the first thing I thought was WOW the pull of gravity never ceases to amaze me. LOL.
