woof, and other “words”

So I always wondered why people taught kids how to say animal sounds. It’s not like it’s a huge life skill or anything. Now that I have Miles I understand that you teach them animal sounds because it’s something they can actually say before words. Well bring it on! Miles got “Baa” for the sheep down a while ago and has since added “moo” and now his newest animal sound is “woof woof.” (Miles’s friend Stella, a fellow one year old, knows exotic animals like what the lion says. Man, we haven’t left the farm to those crazy words yet! We need to expand Miles’ animal vocab to keep up!) So back to what the dog says….

Just like his mama and papa, he’s got a very expressive face, so if you are a skilled (and actually, not so skilled) lip reader, you can tell that Miles is saying in a low breathy voice, “Woof woof!”

John took these pics today, which is a total treat because I’m usually the one snapping the shots of Miles.

So here’s the “FFFF” part of “woof!”

Gotta get a big breath for the second “woof!”

Ok, so can you tell that Miles is going to have our eye brows? (If anybody knew me before I started waxing my brows at the age of 7 (ha, I wish!) you know that I’m a female Groucho Marx.) John’s got some major brows too, so Miles is going to be a hairy guy. Speaking of hair, this kid needs another cut!

I was bouncing Miles on my knee, so John just got Miles’ lips in this one and we love it. If you recall, when I saw Miles for the first time it was his luscious lips that were the first things I noticed about him. His cheeks are now trying to compete with those lips.

We had a great doctor’s appointment today. Our doctor is this super down to earth woman who has two kids herself. We LOVE her! She’s so real and confesses to us her own mistakes or things she let’s go on and gives great advice. She said Miles looks great and he is 75th percentile for height and just under 50th percentile for weight. (Surprise, surprise, we pretty much know we are going to have a skinny kid.) She did hear his slight heart murmur which made me totally erupt into my usual nervous coping mechanism, giggles. I hate it when she can hear it (I think she has heard it once before) because his heart murmur is supposed to be this thing that you can only hear with special machines and that will just go away over time. (Which it totally will.) But we still have to go through a chest x-ray and EKG in a few weeks to make sure it’s not turning into something else. It was easy as pie last year, but it will be interesting to see how we are supposed to get a one year old to lay still for a chest x ray.

Enough of that boring stuff! Miles has just been keeping us in smiles lately. His latest new word he says is when I feed him food with noodles in it he says, “No Do’s” for noodles. It’s so cute! (Another thing I used to not get is how people could say their kids could talk and then they start speaking and you have no idea what they are saying.) So I get it now. You are basically making a whole new language for just the family to understand.

I have lots more cute photos, but I’m trying to pace myself and not stay up late blogging when I should be sleeping.

Thanks to everybody who commented on my nutso blog from yesterday. You guys are the best!

Thanks for the “shout-out” to Stella…maybe she can roar, but refuses to moo. We’re still working on that one. I LOVE Miles’s little face and those lips are unreal! Keep up the great work, mom!

Betsy – I can totally relate to your post. Olivia is totally into animal sounds and she has about 10 that she says all of the time! It cracks us up! You will also be amazed by how quickly their vocabulary starts to expand. I think Olivia has a new word each day! It is so cool! 🙂
