molly’s senior photos

Meet Molly. She came all the way from Wabash to have her senior photos taken on a rainy afternoon. Though you wouldnโ€™t know it, this smile totally brightened the day. Molly, you are ADORABLE in this photo. I personally love photos where people look warm and inviting. Like someone you want to go sit in…

What a gorgeous girl! Her eyes are just stunning. I love the one of her laughing against the fence. (I can totally see Britney in her hey-day there!)

  • MichelleSeptember 17, 2009 - 12:28 am

I love this location (I’ve seen it in other of your sessions). So cool.

    Looking BEAUTIFUL Molly!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Maya LaurentSeptember 17, 2009 - 1:27 am

She is stunning! Love that shot of her laying down – it just brings out her eyes so much!

We have a very poor showing for senior portraits in New Zealand, it’s an area of huge opportunity and seeing fantastic pictures like this gives me so much inspiration. I feel like I can set the world on fire by launching senior shoots to a really high level. Thank you for being so good!

hot saturday night for bets & john

My advice to single people is if you are a nerd, try very hard to find another nerd to spend the rest of your life with. Then, when you get the crazy idea at 10:30 on a Saturday night to learn how to sew, they wonโ€™t even hesitate. In fact, they will be totally excited…

that scarf sounds soooo cute. I’ve been wanting to make one for a long time now. :]

  • Heather MichelleSeptember 16, 2009 - 5:21 am

Oh suggestions for sewing….Even though Miles is too big for BabyLegs. Use the same idea for cutting off the socks and heming them, but sew the ‘Baby Legs’ to a matching short sleeve shirt that Miles will mostlikely outgrow by this winter.

  • Wendi KingSeptember 16, 2009 - 5:27 am

I love that you guys did this together! I also love th t- shirt tote idea. I have a metric ton of old t-shirts from an intro to sewing class I used to teach and now one more creative and useful way to make them go away! Woot! So what is miles going to be for Halloween? There are tons of simple patterns out there that can be adapted to make just about anything, so I personally would start with an idea and then go pattern searching. I am so excited that you guys have discovered sewing together! Also, jelous of the couples massage…. I will have to bookmark this post to remind Jeff that 4 is the side by side massage anniversary!

  • SamanthaSeptember 16, 2009 - 11:07 am

LOVE IT!!! sewing machines are very fascinating, but I definitely have no idea how to work one ๐Ÿ™ oh and john’s bag is HILARIOUS

  • CassieSeptember 16, 2009 - 12:08 pm

You guys are hilarious! John’s bag really does look like a giant pair of underwear. I’ve seen people use old sweaters to make pillow covers, and they usually turn out really cool. The biggest unfinished project I have is actually from high school….I cut all of my cheerleading and dance tshirts to make a quilt–the shirts are all sewn together but there is definitely no back to it. I have a feeling it will never get done.

  • AprilSeptember 16, 2009 - 12:14 pm

You 2 have got to be the cutest couple ever!!! Not very many couples can say they have sewn together, SO fun!! Oh and this website is super cool for sewing projects. http://www.craftbits.com/sewing-crafts

  • annie pSeptember 16, 2009 - 12:32 pm

yeah -so glad it came out of the closet! love the stretchy underwear bag and of course the scarf modification – perfect first time projects! I know miles is out of baby legs but my drew still wears some of penny’s and calls them pirate arms – of course i made them out of socks with skulls and crossbones – it’s hilarious and fits his personality – i can see miles enjoying them. start by making a basic cape for miles – it will be super easy – promise! that and get a basic pattern for sleep pants and make that little boy some jammies in fun fabric that he picks out! oh the possibilities are endless!

  • keith clarkSeptember 16, 2009 - 2:25 pm

I wanted to go on record as the only male commenting here: Even though I have not seen you two in three years, I can totally see you too in that evening. That is the simple bliss that comes with family, age and creativity.

  • Pat QuinnSeptember 16, 2009 - 3:37 pm

I love to sew but my portfolio contains 85% Halloween costumes! Love the bags — keep having fun with your sewing machine! Another easy project — I got some silk drapes on clearance and made reusable gift bags (with gold cord for ties) that look great under the tree at Christmas!

  • MichelleSeptember 16, 2009 - 3:49 pm

hahaha!!! I am SO DYING to see the video!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I pulled out my dust covered sewing machine once. I am clueless when it comes to sewing too. But I wanted to make rag curlers for my daughter (ala Little House on the Prairie) and when my husband walked in the room he all but took over the project. Driving a sewing machine is THRILLING. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nice work on your bags. You are quite a seamstress. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • rachelSeptember 16, 2009 - 4:24 pm

Betsy- John’s bag made me literally laugh out loud today in the library and EVERYONE was staring at me, what a hilarious creation! i love the t-shirt idea ๐Ÿ™‚ so cute! what a fun idea!

  • MonikaSeptember 16, 2009 - 5:04 pm

I’ve been reading your blog for a loooong time, but never posted a comment! Todays post had me rolling with laughter, seriously… that bag made out of the undershirt!!! I’m still laughing right now!!! =D

I have a unfinished scarf sitting below my nightstand… I started knitting it when I was pregnant with my first baby (she’ll be 10 soon, just to give you an idea!).

  • melSeptember 16, 2009 - 6:37 pm

    a. our baby, would love some babylegs ๐Ÿ™‚ b. i saw that tote in ‘family fun’, i actually showed another teacher bc its such a cute easy idea! 3. make some throw pillows, they are SUPER EASY!!

  • Maya LaurentSeptember 17, 2009 - 1:27 am

I love it! Way to spend a night together! ๐Ÿ™‚ And happy early anniversary!

  • ChristinaSeptember 17, 2009 - 3:57 pm

    Happy Anniversary!

I’ll have to try out the tshirt bags too — I decided yesterday to do a bigger undertaking of sewing machine craftiness (a quilt to use for sessions) once the holiday rush is over. Considering how much the bobbin holder hated me years ago, it should be interesting!

  • GailSeptember 17, 2009 - 6:13 pm

Betsy, This looks SO fun! I’ve been wanting to pick up sewing for a while now, so you guys have given me inspiration. And tomorrow night, you can talk to my hubby about how multi-purpose those sleeves to T-shirts can be. You do NOT want to see what he looks like when he wears his to run in when it’s cold. OMG IT’S RIDICULOUS.

BTW: I have this book and would be more than willing to share ๐Ÿ˜‰

So why does his backpack look so normal on him? ๐Ÿ™‚ He looks so adorable on his first day! How did they grow up so fast?!

  • GailSeptember 17, 2009 - 6:09 pm

HOLY CRAP – are you putting growth hormones in his milk Bets? This post is INSANE! (speaking of insane, that kid is INSANELY adorable ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • […] Miles is back at preschool for his second year now and he is like a fish in water. Actually we both are. (Minus my one carpool pick up drama where I was the idiot mom holding up the whole line.) There was no drama for his mama this year as going to preschool was no big thing. (Last year it was his first year and of course, I was all a twitter preparing for it.) Last year I was able to get that perfect shot of him right before he got out the door. This year? Well, with a six week old in tow there was no time for photos. (Blargh!) So I frantically snapped shots paparazzi style in the parking lot, dodging other parents. (Here’s last year’s first day of school shot.) […]

a very special family

I got an email from the sweet mommy of this beautiful family, Valerie, needing a photo shoot. Not just of this adorable little guy, who just happens to be named Milesโ€ฆ โ€ฆbut of her entire 15 person family. Now, I donโ€™t photograph families larger than six people, however, but as you see here, sometimes you…

Betsy, I don’t know you personally but you have captured photos of some of the best people in my life. I am close friends with Lauren Houser, and Jessica Gensic is the leader of my bible study. These pictures brought tears to my eyes, because this family is so close to my heart thank you for showing their beauty through these pictures i am so in love with your work!

  • AliSeptember 14, 2009 - 9:16 pm

Betsy, this session is just absolutely outstanding. What a beautiful and fun family, and your work in capturing such joy-filled images of so many people (and toddlers too!) is just amazing. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

  • JessSeptember 14, 2009 - 9:38 pm

Oh Betsy, please your tender soul for being able to capture the very essence of what a beautiful family is. I don’t know this family, but have had my own experience with cancer. For this very brief moment, you helped this family to see “normal” again…you helped this family to freeze their love. Probably some of my most favorite photos you’ve done.

    And for the family,

“Lord I pray that You will lay Your healing hands on this family. That you will give Julie the courage to fight, but to be her Savior when she most needs you. God I pray that You will comfort Julie’s husband, children and grandchildren, that they will know in their heart that in all things You have a plan and a purpose. Father I ask that You will bring the most skilled and knowledgeable doctors into Julie’s life, that they may find the best way to beat this dreadful disease. And most importantly, though I never have met this beautiful family, I thank You for them, for their example of genuine family love and bonding. I pray that you bless this family and protect them throughout this journey they are now on. I pray this in your name. Amen.”

  • SarahSeptember 14, 2009 - 9:55 pm

This was amazing. Thanks to you and Jon for such a touching photoshoot. I will be thinking of this family. I get goose bumps looking at the love in her husbands eyes in the one of just the two of them. I can tell he is thinking “We can do this.”

    Amazing, Betsy.

  • Marlene ClarkSeptember 15, 2009 - 4:44 pm

Betsy, I don’t know you and am only a friend of a friend to this family (my friend Joan DeMerchant forwarded this for me to see). But the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words?” Well you have created a million words with your gift of photography. God has used you in a most mpressive way. It was nice for me to see pictures of people that I have prayed for that I didn’t know but were on our church Prayer Chain. My prayers continue for this family. Your comments with the pictures touched my heart as well as reading comments of others here. Boy talk about tears…but they were tears of blessings.

  • Adam ClarkSeptember 15, 2009 - 5:35 pm

Betsy, these are awesome! I can’t tell you how much Val and I appreciate you fitting us in to your schedule and taking such phenomenal pictures of the fam. You have ministered to our family through your talent, and we are all so grateful. And Val and I can’t stop looking at how you captured our little Miles, what a handsome dude.

  • Jess GensicSeptember 15, 2009 - 11:35 pm

The photos are remarkable. Not just because they are of my family and people I love so much, but because you captured our spirit, love for each other, and togetherness so well. Thank you, Betsy, for the gift you’ve given us. And to John, thank you for writing an inspiring piece that narrated in emotion what no one could have said in words. Betsy and John–what an incredible team you are! And finally, I must add, considering it was at least 100 degrees outside during that shoot, how impressed I am that none of us appear glistening and sweaty…what magic!

This town is sometimes wonderfully small. I met Julie in august of 1994. She was the consultant at my neighbors pampered chef party. Within a month I started selling for her. Julie was my mentor, my director, my role model and my friend. We worked together for almost ten years. The impact she had on my life I still feel today. Our lives went in different directions after I became a single parent, but the things she taught me about being a business woman, a mother and a good human are still with me today. All the little vongunten kids are grown up with kids of their own now! it makes my heart happy in this difficult time to see them all rally around this amazing woman and her wonderful husband. Positive thoughts to you all. Thank you Betsy for sharing this moment.

  • Stacie GensicSeptember 17, 2009 - 10:02 am

Ahhhh the VonGunten clan, Fort Wayne’s finest! Betsy, like everyone else has said-you absolutely captured the essence of this family’s spirit. These pictures are beautiful, all your pictures always are (because you’re talented beyond measure when you stick that camera in your hand), but these are especially good. Maybe it’s because I know these peeps and they aren’t acting in these photos-they truly are carefree, loving, and beautiful all the way around and through. They always seem to be cracking up about something! So fun to be around. Props to Julie and Steve for making such a gorgeous and whole-hearted family who all are bursting with love for Jesus.
