ice storm photography = fun, but frozen fingers

We woke up to a gorgeous icicle wonderland this morning. We were fine (of course, since we work from home and barely leave the house) but a very large part of Allen county was on total lockdown without power in their homes. (Some of my very good friends are included in this. I’m soooo sorry guys!!) Actually, we are super lucky to have power because just a neighborhood across the street from us doesn’t have power. Wow, that was a totally boring story about losing power. Anyway, while Miles napped this afternoon, I busted out my camera, threw on my Uggs and headed out to photograph some cool ice.

You might think this is totally boring, but I had a blast…until my fingers felt like they were going to fall off. Mind you, I should totally be working on Christmas card inserts, but instead, I’m screwing around with this stuff. What can I say, it’s my artsy fartsy irresponsible side. (Oh, and if your attention span is long enough, there just might be a photo of Miles at the end for the Grandma’s checking in.)

I hope you hang in there with these ice photos for the last one. It’s my favorite.

This one is kind of cheesy, but hey, it’s Christmas, I had to include it. Plus, Miles tries to lick this big candy cane when he goes outside. It’s so gross, but hilarious at the same time.

This was some crazy fluffy grass frozen in a curly bend.

The light turned blue really quickly as the sun set. So the last handful had a totally different feel. This feels so graceful to me.

The sound of the strings of the ice covered willows sounded like wind chimes as they knocked together in the wind. There is something about an ice storm that amplifies all of the sounds around you and makes you totally aware of your surroundings in a whole new way.

When the willows weren’t hanging straight down, they were twisting and turning all over, frozen in place.

This one is my FAVORITE. The trees would make these huge umbrellas as they leaned over to kiss the ground. If you crept inside it was like standing inside a giant cage made of glass.

So that was my afternoon in the ice. I HIGHLY recommend getting out and photographing this amazing weather! It’s so much fun and always good for the soul to give nature some attention.

I promised a Miles photo, so here’s one from Breakfast with Santa. Miles was practicing the theory of, “If I don’t see Santa, he doesn’t exist.” He was sitting very still and just looking as far away from Santa as he could as the big man in red came over to say hello. Then of course, once Santa walked away, his attention was back to his doughnut.

Thanks for tuning in! I have a bazillion things to do before Christmas, but I’m trying to be zen about it and just trust that it will all get done in time. Yea, if I were you, I would just hope that your name happens to be on my list of gifts already purchased. I’m just sayin.

Nighty night!

Gorgeous photos of the ice! My in-laws had to cancel a bunch of stuff because of the weather. Glad you still had power!
