just the beginning

For my birthday, my mom gave me this awesome book by Martha Stewart. I just LOVE it. It’s so inspiring, the photography and layout is beautiful and well done and there are plenty of simple and easy projects that I can actually do. I LOVE it.

Ms

Flipping through the pages, these simple little baby blankets caught my eye. I wanted a simple project I could do in an evening while getting in some hanging out time with a girlfriend over the weekend. (Yes, I’m a nerd that I ask my friends to sew with me. I don’t care what you think, it was FUN!)

With a second baby it’s not like I get to go out and buy a bunch of new stuff, so I thought it would be fun to make some of the basics that I know I’ll use all the time and make them exactly how I want them. So here’s my first little stack of a receiving blanket plus two burp cloths that I made in an evening. (There’s one more polka dotted one, but it was previously occupied in Miles’ bed at the time this photo was taken.)

Blanket 2

My girl Gail spotted the funky baby fabrics and I just MELTED. We are kicking ourselves for not noting the designer’s name who created the fabrics. (So if anybody knows, please comment! we just got them at JoAnn’s Fabrics.) I just love them. They are so whimsical and fun.

Blanket 5

One side is soft (and absorbent) flannel and the other side, cotton, just as Martha recommended. No, we don’t know the sex of the baby and yes, these might be a little girly, but I’ve never been one to worry about stuff like that. I usually error a bit on the feminine side with baby stuff because really, baby stuff is for me to enjoy and help keep my sleep deprived self upbeat. As long as it’s soft and comfy, the baby doesn’t care!

Blankets 4

Once I get all my work done for the spring and I get to play on the sewing machine again, I would love sew a little quilt (or two) or something more complex than these super simple blankets and and this fabric would be sooooo much fun to work with. I still have more burp clothes to make though because if King Baby 2.0 is anything like Miles, two will NOT cut it.

Blanket

So that’s the beginning of my nesting projects. Thanks for looking at four photos of three blankets. 😉 Oh and yes, these photos were taken in the baby’s nursery. We have it all cleared out of my office stuff and Miles’ old baby furniture is in there, but not much else has happened. Lots more to do, but as I mentioned in my previous post, I need to get my photography work done before I get to play with fun nursery nesting. Things are moving right along with that as I’m swimming in orders (thank you!) and wrapping up final editing these days. With every photography project I check off my list I kind of freak because that means I’m getting closer and closer to my maternity leave. AHHHHHHHHHHH! I haven’t not worked since Miles was seven months old. It will be interesting to see what me as a stay at home mom looks like again for a while. The one thing that doesn’t change is working or not working, I still blog, so nothing will be changing there!

You did a GREAT job with those! I LOVE your fabric choices. You should set up an Etsy shop for your crafts!

What a great idea. I have been thinking about what I can do as a shower gift for a friend of mine. I think I’ll have to steal your idea. The fabric with the words is baby story by Heidi Grace. The fabric with the hearts is Heidi Grace too. I just found it on Joann fabrics website when I was looking at baby fabrics. So cute!

Dang it! I’m so impressed and now I want to have another baby so I can make these! ha! J/K. We’re getting a puppy in 2 weeks though. Do puppies need receiving blankets?! ;P
